Bali Paddy Fields: How To Capture Beautiful Sunset Photos

Featuring beautiful paddy fields and great locations for sunset photos, the island of Bali is extremely photogenic. A trip up into the hills, around the town of Ubud, will allow you to find a range of picturesque rural locations ideally suited to landscape photos.
I made this photo on the way back from a day exploring a variety of temples and rice terraces in the island’s hill country.
Just as mist was rising in the distance, a break in the cloud cover allowed enough light to penetrate through to the dimly lit water and paddy fields in the background.
The warm, sunset light in the sky reflected down onto the water, providing a dramatic contrast with the cool, brooding colors in the surrounding landscape.
Additional adjustments in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop helped to further improve brightness and local contrast on the land and water.
Of course it’s all dependent upon you being out there, looking for great sunset photos, with your camera near at hand.
While it's not essential to travel the world, it is important to be out and about at the best times of day for landscape photos.
The trick is to fit it into your lifestyle, in a way that makes it habitual.
Taking Sunset Photos and Beyond
Sunrises may be too difficult to fit into your lifestyle. Unless I’m on a special landscape photography adventure, they are for me as well.
That’s why I try to ensure I’m out and about, at an appropriate location, for sunset photos as often as I can be.
You'll find it worthwhile to be at the location, ready to go, from around an hour before sunset.
Ideally, you'll also be prepared to wait for the afterglow, which can occur up to 40 minutes after the sun sets.
Of course personal safety has to be considered when hanging around to photograph the afterglow.
You'll likely be heading back to your car in the dark, so a head lamp and a warm top is also a good idea.
