Photographing The Forlorn

A forlorn figure, carved in stone, at the base of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.

This forlorn looking character is part of a larger sculpture featuring a group of figures at the base of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.

Photographing The Human Condition

I was drawn to the scene because it explores The Human Condition, a theme that underlies much of my own portrait photography.

The figure in question appears to be a man of the land, which is also suggested by the items surrounding him. The stresses of working the land, both physically and emotionally, seem to be depicted in the subjects almost blank stare.

Exploring The Inner Landscape

While the scene depicts the outer world it also explores an inner landscape, that of a man drained by worry and anxiety.

This is at the very heart of art. The ability of the artist to move beyond an accurate documentation of an outer reality and explore the more complex, more intimate and more vital world existing both within the subject and on the edge of our understanding.
