Twilight - An Eerie, Evocative Light

Inner city scene at twilight in North Fitzroy, MelbourneCanon 5D Mark II camera and Canon 24-105mm f4 L series lens @ 35mm

Twilight is a very special time that marks the transition between day and night. While its often a rush to make images as the sun sets, the quiet associated with twilight is a time when the world seems to slow down to an eerie silence.

In the gathering gloom it becomes harder to discern what's going on around us. To compensate our other senses seem to heighten, perhaps as a response to our ancestors days as hunters and gatherers. I love coming home from a long walk at such times of day.

This photo was made during twilight in North Fitzroy, an inner suburb of Melbourne. I was out and about testing a Nikon 800E camera and had just finished photographing the brick tower in the background. This particular photo is a HDR. The camera's already amazing resolution has been heightened with pretty aggressive processing, evident in the texture on the wall in the far right of the image.

One of the amazing things about photography is that it provides us with the opportunity to explore the world, whether familiar or otherwise, in a different way. In fact this site is only a couple km from where I've lived for around the last 15 years, yet this is the first time I've explored and photograph it. Thank goodness for photography.

At the end of the day, no pun intended, its just a small slice of inner city life which I hope you enjoy.
