I met this worker in a small, dingy room just off a side street in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. I don't know what he was mixing, possibly some sort of Indian sweet, but he was certainly working hard. I asked him to pause for a moment while I made a few photographs.
The light was very low and required maximum aperture, high ISO and a slow shutter speed.
I often marvel at the strength and endurance of the common worker in developing countries. And despite the economic miracle that India is becoming, life for the poor remains hard.
Yet happiness abounds. India is a deeply spiritual country and the ability of the people to face each new day with equal measures of calm and vigour should give hope to us all. Perhaps the uncomplicated nature of their lives helps keep them centred and at peace. It is a testament to the inner strength of this most resilient nation.
