This image was made with the aid of late afternoon light in the Port Campbell National Park along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia.

The trick when photographing action as it peaks, as in the case of this wave, is to anticipate the moment and squeeze (pushing will likely cause camera shake) the camera’s shutter release just prior to the action actually happening. The idea is to overcome the delay from brain to finger to shutter release. In this case shooting close to the action, from a low angle of view, adds extra power to the scene.

The image was processed in Adobe Photoshop CS4 where the original color image was rendered into black-and-white via the Black and White Adjustment layer. I then added a subtle warm/cool split tone with the aid of a Curves Adjustment layer.
